5. DIY Some Cute Clothes

On the same day we got our free donuts, Linda and I knocked out one more bucket list item. We decided to DIY some clothes, because a girl can never have too many clothes or be too cheap.

Linda wanted to go towards creating university shirts, since her orientation was the next day. As for me, I wanted to spruce up some basic shirts, so that I can easily slip one on and look at least a "bit" fashionable.

Linda's shirts were much more complicated than mine. In order to achieve a maroon color, she dyed the shirts with RIT dye, and used gold fabric spray paint for the sayings.

The stencils that we made were from paper. I definitely recommend card stock paper, because mine came out a bit mushy at the end.

Unfortunately, I had to go home early during our DIY sesh. But Linda has kindly sent me some pictures to share.

I made two shirts as well, but kept with the color scheme black and white. My first shirt was inspired by this tutorial I found on youtube. I'm assuming it's replicating a well-known design. So to avoid any trouble, I am not in any way claiming these designs to be mine. I did also make a shirt with a band's logo, and it's purely fan-made. I admire the band, and thought their logo was pretty awesome. The Neighbourhood-Go check out their songs!

I heard acrylic paint is fine to use on fabric, so that's what I used.

For my first shirt, I made a stencil and sponged on the paint. It came out messy looking for me, because the paint soaked under some parts of the stencil. Which kind of gave the shirt it's own flair I guess.

For my second shirt, I used tape. It came out much cleaner, but took much longer. I also cut off the sleeves of my t-shirt to make a muscle tee. I'm still unsure if I want to crop it or not though.

After I finished painting all of my shirts and they were all dried, I used parchment paper, put it on top of the design, and ironed over it. This allowed the paint to kind of seal and soak into the fabric, and prevents the paint from stretching.

I'm not sure how my shirts will hold up with washing... but I guess I'll update later about this lil' issue.

We can pretty much tell that Linda is much better at diying. :P

But yep, number 5 is now checked off. Hurray!
